'More Than the Stars in The Sky' is a depiction of the Child Jesus with His two uncles–Cleopas who is holding Him, and Zachariah who stands in the distance. The reference image for this painting is an old photograph of myself as an infant with two of my paternal uncles. Here, the family of Jesus not only includes his parents but his extended family. The time of day depicted in this piece is significant. The dusk sky alludes to when God told Abraham to look up at the sky and promised him that he would have as many descendants as there are stars. Although Abraham obliged, the subsequent passage explains that God and Abraham had this interaction prior to sunset, when none of these stars would be visible. The arrival of Christ, even in His infancy, indicates a completion and fulfillment. Now, the stars are beginning to reveal themselves not long after the sun has set.
This piece is part of the ‘Santo y Cotidiano’ collection, which depicts various scenes within Christ’s early life. These idyllic, familiar scenes bring to light the paradox of an all-powerful God becoming a small infant in need of care and assert that ordinary, mundane life can be a place of great sanctity with great love.
